LICK CREEK - At approximately 8 a.m. on Friday, Mingo County 911 dispatched law enforcement to Lick Creek regarding a report of shots being fired into a residence.
Upon arrival, Mingo County Sheriff’s Deputies E. Sherrill, B. Moore and Sgt. J. Muncy were joined by West Virginia State Police Senior Trooper D. Moore at the home of Vicki White and Louie Gauze. They were told that Oscar Roberts Jr. had fired several rounds into the dwelling and had since left the location in a black Chevrolet S-10 truck.
The truck was observed by Deputy Sherrill, as it was pulling into a nearby driveway. Sherrill ordered both the driver (Oscar Roberts Jr.) and his passenger (Oscar Roberts Sr.) to exit the vehicle and then proceeded to search the suspects and the vehicle for weapons, but none were found. After checking the immediate perimeter of the vehicle, the deputy located a M66 Super-single 20 gauge shotgun. It appeared that the suspect had tried to hide the weapon by throwing it under a tree before the officer arrived.
While conducting a criminal background check on Roberts, Jr., it was revealed that he had previously been convicted of felony offenses in 1998, 1999 and 2007, making it illegal for him to be in possession of, or to discharge, a firearm.
Roberts Jr. was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, wanton endangerment, brandishing and felon in possession of a firearm.
The defendant was arraigned before Mingo County Chief Magistrate Dallas Toler and was remanded to the custody of the Southwestern Regional Jail on a $50,000 bond.
The investigation into this alleged shooting continues, and Roberts Sr., who is also a convicted felon, is expected to be arrested and charged with conspiracy regarding this incident upon his release from the Williamson Memorial Hospital, where he was transported by ambulance after complaining of chest pains while being questioned.
