WILLIAMSON - The operator of a motorcycle that was involved in a one-vehicle accident on U.S. 119 on Thursday reportedly left the scene prior to law enforcement arriving, but quickly realized he would not be successful in evading arrest.

According to information provided by Mingo County Sherrif’s Department, Deputy E. Sherrill was responding to the Dans Branch community off of U.S. 119 to the scene of an accident involving a motorcycle that, according to witnesses, appeared to be operated by an intoxicated male. While en route, he was notified by dispatch that the rider had gotten back onto the motorcycle and fled the scene.

Sherrill proceeded to pass the motorcycle in the southbound lane of U.S. 119 and stated in the report that the rider was swerving back and forth on the highway. The deputy then turned, began pursuit and performed a traffic stop.

The deputy identified the rider as Rush Bryant Dials, 24, of Delbarton, who was riding a black Suzuki motorcycle. Sherill stated that when he approached Dials, he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The defendant agreed to a three-part field sobriety test and was unable to complete any of the steps. He was then placed under arrest for DUI, 1st. Upon investigation, the deputy also found that Dials was driving on a suspended license for reasons of unpaid citations.

Dials was transported to the Williamson Memorial Hospital E.R. to have injuries evaluated that he had sustained in the accident. While at the hospital, the defendant consented to blood work to determine the level of intoxicants in his system. The lab work was sent to the West Virginia State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Dials was arraigned before Magistrate Pam Newsome who set bond at $2,000 ($1,000 on each charge). The defendant remains incarcerated in the Southwestern Regional Jail in Holden.

Daniel Hatfield, 27, of the Matewan area, was also arrested on Thursday by MCSD Lt. R. Hatfield, on charges of domestic battery and destruction of property.

According to the police report, Hatfield allegedly smacked Sabrina Hatfield, his 8-months pregnant wife in the face, pulled her hair and shoved her to the ground.

The defendant is also said to have shattered a glass chandelier in the dwelling where the argument took place, belonging to Arlie Johnson. The officer stated that pieces of glass were in the dining room floor that had fallen from the broken light fixture.

Hatfield was arraigned before Magistrate Dallas Toler who set bond at $1,000.
