WILLIAMSON — An out-of-town Ohio man severely injured himself last weekend after an accident on the Hatfield-McCoy Trails.

Nathan Wencel, of Lyndherst, Ohio, was riding on the Buffalo Mountain trailhead, on trail #10, when he wrecked at around 9:46 a.m. last Saturday, Sept. 22.

Wencel badly injured his knee after flipping his ATV. Chattaroy Fire Chief Joe Rumore said that, while he was unsure of what caused the accident, the group of six or seven people who were riding on the trail with Wencel, said that he had hit a dip.

Rumore said that Wencel was in his 30s, but was unsure of his exact age. Wencel was transferred to Williamson Memorial Hospital and later to Cabell Huntington Hospital.

The Chattaroy Volunteer Fire Department, who responded with five firefighters was assisted by the Delbarton Volunteer Fire Department, who responded with three. Rumore offered his thanks to the DVFD for helping.

He also said that Wencel’s ATV made it out relatively unscathed, as it was able to be driven out by a Delbarton firefighter.
