GILBERT – The Mingo Central swimming team is ready to take the plunge in only their second season.
Last year there was only one member on the team, but this season coach Katrina Blankenship has 10 members on the Miners swimming team. Team members include juniors Derrick Blankenship, Mitchell Bobbera and Kyle Surber, sophomores Amber Thaxton and Katie Wellman, along with freshmen Nick Canterbury, Tyler Evans, Kailey Stuart, Jessica Sturgell and Dylan Wellman.
The good thing is that all of the team members are underclassmen and will be back next season. Thaxton is the only returning swimmer from last year.
“The swim team competed against Spring Valley and Woodrow Wilson this past Saturday,”
Blankenship said. “Our next meet is January 8 at Teays Valley against Hurricane.’
“Some of the events that the swimmers competed in were the 50 meter freestyle, 100 meter backstroke, 100 meter free style and the 200 meter freestyle relay,” Blankenship added.
The Miners will host their first ever home meet on January 24 at the Larry Joe Harless Center in Gilbert. They also practice at the Harless Center.
Blankenship is being assisted by Eric Hatfield this season.
The meet schedule for the rest of the season is as follows:
Jan. 8 - Tri-County YMCA - Hurricane, WV
Jan. 12 - HYCAT Meet - University of Charleston - Charleston, WV
Jan. 19 - Charleston YMCA Invitational - Charleston, WV
Jan. 29 - Buck Harless Invitational - Larry Joe Harless Community Center - Gilbert, WV
