A Kentucky man received minor injuries after accidentally shooting himself at at the Williamson Treatment Center, a methadone clinic in West Williamson,W.Va. Corey Hughes, 23 of Turkey Creek, had accidentally cocked the pistol while placing his hands in his pockets, causing the gun to discharge a bullet into his foot. Williamson Police Department and the West Virginia State Police responded to the scene unsure of it’s nature.
“Clinic officials were unsure of what was going on when they called it into 911, me along with West Virginia State Police Cpl. Harper responded to the call unaware if it was a domestic type incident or a robbery,” stated Lt. C.D. Rockel with Williamson Police Department.
Hughes was transported by another individual at the clinic to South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
“This was an accident, but there were other people present at the time of the incident and it was dangerous,” stated Rockel. “These people were extremely lucky that it didn’t pass through and ricochet striking someone else.”
Although Hughes had a weapon permit he was in violation bringing a gun to the clinic. Police haven’t filed charges at this time, but the investigation is ongoing and the clinic may discontinue Hughes treatment.
