Once again several area high school football players shined in the spotlight from last Friday night.

Alex “Booger” Lee caught five passes for 103 yards, a touchdown and set up another score in Mingo Central’s homecoming victory over Tolsia. He also recovered a key fumble and had several tackles on defense for the Miners. Lee was the WXCC radio station Player of the Game.

Mikey Newsome threw for three TD passes and 149 yards and no interceptions in Tug Valley’s tough loss at Westside.

Belfry’s Madison Ghormley got 10 tackles against Ashland in the Pirates game against the Tomcats. Tony Messer hauled in a TD pass and was also strong on defense for BHS.

SHORT STUFF:

… Former Williamson High School athlete Wes Robinson, who was paralyzed in a football related accident back in the mid-1990s, was involved in a serious traffic accident last week in Tennessee. Robinson is hospitalized and the Facebook messages for prayers have been many for Wes. If we find out any updates on his condition, we’ll let all of our readers know.

… WVU’s Andrew Buie, Alex Okafor (Texas) and Tavon Austin (West Virginia) have been named Big 12 Football Players of the Week, as selected by a media panel. Austin, special team player of the week, was recognized for the second time this season after picking up offensive player of the week honors on Sept. 24. Buie was the offensive player of the week, while Okafor got the award for defensive player of the week. It was Buie’s and Okafor’s first time winning the award.

… Tug Valley’s Joe Deskins finished 7^th in the state in the Class A golf tournament. He qualified for his performance in the regional tourney. The state match was played in Wheeling. Deskins shot an 82 and 84 for a 2-day total of 166. He was a medalist for his performance in the state tourney and also selected to the All-State team. He is coached by Aileen Perry.

West Virginia women’s basketball senior center Asya Bussie will be out for the 2012-13 season after suffering a season-ending knee injury at practice last Thursday. “Knowing the type of person Asya is, there is no doubt in my mind, she will turn this into a positive and come back from this bigger and stronger,” head coach Mike Carey said.

… The highly touted twin guards Aaron and Andrew Harrison of Texas say they’re headed to Kentucky. The Fort Bend Travis prep stars, now seniors, announced their college choice at their school on Thursday. They chose to play for UK and head coach John Calipari over Maryland and SMU.

Both 6-foot-5, the Harrisons led their school to a 36-4 record and the 5A state championship game in 2011-12. Aaron averaged 18.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists; Andrew averaged 12.1 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals last season.
