DELBARTON — The rain and the mud and the Williamson Wolfpack couldn't stop Jacob Butcher Friday night as the Burch High School Bulldogs football team beat Williamson, 6-0.

Butcher rolled up 145 yards and the game's sole touchdown on 22 carries. Butcher scored on a 57-yard run with nine seconds to go in the second quarter.

From there, it was up to the Burch defense to prevent the Wolfpack from reaching paydirt.

The Bulldogs defense made at least three goal-line stands in the game, even stopping the Wolfpack after it got down to the BHS 4-yard line twice.

In the third quarter, Williamson reached the 4, but a pass from Charles White to Justin Hensley was incomplete in the end zone.

Williamson reached the Burch 4-yard line with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter and threatened to tie the game or win it, but, on first and goal from the 4, Burch's A.D. Muncy hit Chris Hatcher for a three-yard loss. Matt Wellman came up with only a yard on the next WHS carry and White's pass fell incomplete when Jarrid McCormick slipped in the mud and fell.

On fourth and goal from the 6-yard line, White's pass was incomplete when his receiver didn't turn around to make the catch. Burch took over on downs with only 13 seconds left in the game and the Bulldogs took a knee to seal the win.

"These kids wanted this," Burch Coach James "Butch" Joplin said following the Bulldogs' first win over Williamson since 2005. "We had a heck of a hard practice this week. Williamson is a strong team.
