Westbound Interstate 64 remains closed at Catlettsburg
Crews expediting repairs; eastbound traffic unaffected

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. – The detour route for westbound Interstate 64 will change tonight as work continues to reopen the highway and repair an embankment failure just west of the Catlettsburg interchange.

The new detour route will utilize Exit 191 at Catlettsburg to reconnect to I-64 via US 23 and US 60 in Kentucky.

Crews are continuing construction of a “crossover” to connect I-64’s westbound lanes to the eastbound side. Once finished, two-way traffic will be established on eastbound I-64 so travelers can safely pass the slide area.

Until crossover construction is complete, all westbound I-64 traffic is being detoured along the following route:

 • Westbound I-64 traffic must take Exit 191 to north US 23 to Ashland, then west on US 60 back to I-64 at Exit 185 at Cannonsburg. Detour signs are in place.

The westbound side of the interstate was closed this morning, Sept. 21, at milepoint 190 when pavement began to buckle due to the embankment failure. Contractors have been working since August to stabilize the slide – part of a $20.1 million project that includes repairs at two other slide areas, general roadway and bridge work, and resurfacing eight miles of the highway from the Big Sandy River bridge to just east of Coalton.

Motorists traveling on westbound I-64 or into the Ashland area the next several days should watch for heavy traffic and plan alternate routes if necessary.
