PAINTSVILLE, Ky. - History ! That is what will forever be written in the Sheldon Clark High School sports book as the Sheldon Clark girls golf team became the first SC girls golf team in school history to won the All A 15th region tournament.

Sophomore Laken Newsome also became the first SC girls golfer to win the All A individual title and over on the boys side junior Roger Maynard became the first SC boys golfer to win the 15th region All A championship last week at the Paintsville Golf Course.

Due to all the rain the previous week when the tournament was scheduled to be postponed until August 28 for the boys and August 29 for the girls and plus the number of holes played was cut to nine. It’s not easy to be the favorite coming into any tournament but Maynard shows right away why he was as she posted two birdies and seven pars for two under par on the day to easily defeat Dawson Hamilton of Prestonsburg, who posted a 40. By winning the regional title Maynard will be playing the Eagle Nest Golf Course in Somerset in the state tournament this Saturday. Hamilton will advance to the state tournament and Paintsville won the boys team title and will advance to the state tournament. Paintsville shot 156 while Pikeville was second with a 160.

The following day the girls took center stage and the All A region has been dominated by Pikeville or Paintsville over the years. But with Newsome leading the way the Sheldon Clark girls team set out to make history and they did just that as Newsome won the individual region title and a team they captured the first All A team title. Newsome breezed through the competition as she posted an even par 35, two birdies, two bogies and five pars as she easily outdistanced Katherine Dale of Paintsville and Lauren Blackburn of Pikeville, who both posted a score of 47, or 12 shots back of Newsome.

Overall the girls team won the All A regional team title with a score of 195 to finish 23 shots better that second place Pikeville, who shot a 218. Newsome had a 35, MacKenzie Fraley had a 50, Madison Haney a 54, Carley Fraley a 57 and Mallory Davis a 72. Lakyn Horn is also a member of the squad. Newsome and the girls teams will play in the All A state tournament this coming Saturday at the Woodson Bend Golf Course in Somerset. Coach Ronnie Evans said ” all these athletes have a bright future ahead of them in the game of golf”.
