SETH – The Tug Valley Panthers got their season started off on the right foot as they downed Sherman 20-14 for a good road win at Seth, W.Va.


Coach Tony Clusky’s squad hit pay-dirt first as senior fullback Phillip Lucas scored on a 2-yard run. The XP pass try failed, but the Panthers led 6-0 with 8:23 left in the opening quarter.


Later in the first quarter Tug Valley’s Corbin Oliver scored on a 10- yard run with 4:27 left. Lucas ran in for the 2-point conversion to give TVHS at 14-0 lead.


The Tide got on the board with 1:05 left in the second quarter as Aaron Lowe scored on a 57 yard punt return. Trenton Sheppard kicked the point after to cut the lead to 14-7.


In the third quarter, the home team was able to tie the game


With 8:06 left in the frame, Sherman’s Joseph Jude connected with Braden Harrah on a 20 yard pass reception. Sheppard kicked the extra point to tie the game at 14-14.


Tug Valley was able to take the lead late in the third quarter when freshman Jeremy Dillon scored on 28 yard run with :23 ticks left until the final quarter. The conversion pass fell incomplete, but the Panthers took a 20-14 lead.


Tug Valley’s defense was able to hold the Tide back in the final quarter to make it a happy drive back down Corridor G to Mingo County for the Panthers.


Tug Valley had 35 rushing attempts for 166 yards for an average of 4.7 yards per carry. In the passing game they were 8-for-11 for 110 yards. There total offense output was 276 yards. The Panthers had seven penalties for 60 yards.


Sherman had 37 carries for 128 yards on the ground. In the passing game they were 8-for-12 for 114 yards, for 242 total yards on offense. The Tide had seven flags for 56 yards in penalties.


Individually Dillon led the Panthers with 70 yards on nine carries and a TD. Aaron Copley had 42 yards on three attempts, Justin Baisden nine carries for 40 yards, Corbin Oliver two tries nine yards and a TD, and Lucas three carries for nine yards and a score.


In the receiving game Copley had four receptions for 70, Dillon two receptions for 24 yards and Lucas one catch for 13 yards.


Quarterback Tyler Conley was 9-for-14 for 139 yards, two TDs and not interceptions.


On defense the freshman Dillon led the way with7 tackles and three fumble recoveries, while senior Dwayne Marcum had seven tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and Conley had 7 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 tackles for loss.


Austin Baisden also had 7 tackles, Corbin Oliver 6, Clay Warf 5, Justin Baisden 5 tackles and Lucas 4 tackles, with 1 sack and a forced fumble.


Dillon also punted for TVHS kicking it 3 times for 87 yards, an average of 29 yards.


Tug Valley is 1-0 and will hit the road again this Friday for a long trip to Meadow Bridge.
