MATEWAN - The NWA Appalachia will hold a benefit event Saturday night at the old Matewan High School Tiger Dome dubbed “Wrestling for Phillip.”
Phillip Hurley is a 10 year old student at Matewan Pre-K8 and is currently battling brain cancer. He was first diagnosed in 2012 but is battling the disease again. He is currently taking chemo/radiation treatments in Lexington, Kentucky.
Former heavyweight boxer Buster Douglas and his manager, John Johnson, a native of Red Jacket, will also be in attendance. Douglas will sign autographs and take pictures for donations that will go to Phillip’s medical fees.
Douglas is known for his big upset over Mike Tyson, one of the biggest upsets in sports history. He will also make an appearance at David Jones football camp that day being held at Belfry High School.
Although Phillip is in for the fight of his life, he constantly wears a beautiful smile and has such a great attitude. They are sponsoring this event to assist Phillip’s family with medical/travel expenses so they can get Phillip the treatment he needs.
Local wrestling and boxing fans are invited to join all the fun for Saturday night wrestling.
Fans can see stars such as Stan Lee, The Pope, EZ Money, Bobby Love, Tyson Smith, Nick Vegas, BigDawg Cujo, Jesse Londas, Alex Angel, Lisa Funk, Samantha Starr, hometown favorites Hillbilly Bigg Joe, and Doink the Clown, plus many more. No Limit Entertainment will be providing the music.
Ringside seats are $12, General admission for adults are $10 and for children $5. With purchase of Ringside seats, you will also be allowed to attend a private meet and greet with the wrestlers from 6 to 7 pm. The main event begins at 7:30 p.m.
