My sincere condolences go out to the Fletcher family of Borderland and Dan’s Branch for the passing of Roger Fletcher on Wednesday morning.
Roger came from a sports family starting with his big brother Bob Fletcher, who played for the Chattaroy Yellowjackets back in the early 1960s. Then Curt Fletcher played for the Williamson High School basketball and baseball teams in the mid-1960s. Roger also played hoops and baseball for the Wolfpack in the late 1960s, graduating in 1968.
His younger brother Tommy was a standout basketball and baseball player in the early 70s, while the youngest of the clan, Jimmy, was a fine left-handed pitcher in baseball and also played basketball.
Roger had some health problems over the past few years. He had received a kidney transplant years ago donated by his wife Mattie.
Roger was a huge sports fan and especially followed them when his brother Curt coached the Pack in the last years of the school’s existence.
Roger will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.
… Mark your calendars for the dates of the state high school championships. The SSAC released those dates on Tuesday.
The Super Six for football will once again be played in Wheeling on December 5 and 6. The girls’ basketball tourney will be at the Charleston Civic Center starting March 11th to the 14th, while the boy’s event will be the following week from March 18th to the 21st. The state baseball tourney will be at Power Park in Charleston June 4th to the 6th. The other dates for the other sports like soccer, cheerleading, tennis, softball and more are on the SSAC web-site.
…Former WVU basketball player Devin Ebanks, like Kevin Jones, is playing in the NBA Summer League. Ebanks, who was originally drafted by the LA Lakers, is suiting up for the NBA D-League Select team. He was traded to Dallas, where he was cut. However, he continued to play in the D-League, which is basically a minor league system for the NBA.
Ebanks, like many other players, hopes to sign as a free agent for another NBA team. A good showing in the Las Vegas, Nevada summer league will enable him to do so.
… It’s only 21 days until WVU returns to the field to begin preparation for the 2014 football season. The Mountaineers will have a tough game to start out the season as they face Alabama in the 2014 Chic-fil-A Kickoff Game. As usual, the Tide is a pre-season top 5 ranked team in most polls.
