Just for the record, I was on vacation last week, so I have a lot to catch up on. So here goes …
Former Huntington Prep basketball star Andrew Wiggins was the first overall pick in last week’s NBA draft. This is great for that program and the state of W.Va.
On the other hand, his coach, and the founder of that program Rob Fulford, has left the prep school to become an assistant coach at Missouri. Hopefully that prep school program, which played at Mingo Central last year, will continue to thrive.
… Belfry football coach Philip Haywood has received another award for his mantle. He was recently named the Blanton Collier Sportsmanship Award recipient at the Ky. Chapter of the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Louisville, Ky. He was named the Ky. High School Coach of the Year for outstanding achievements with young athletes.
…The Belfry High School Track and Soccer Complex has reopened. Runners and walkers have been asked to please abide by all listed rules on the complex fence. Absolutely no pets, no bicycles, or skateboards are allowed within the fenced area of the soccer, softball, or baseball fields. Please keep off the soccer field as it has been reseeded for this upcoming season.
… The 2nd Annual Kickin’ Butt for Crohn’s 5-K Run/Walk is being put on by Tonya Cool, Shawn Cool, and the Tug Valley Road Runners Club. The race is taking place on Friday Night, July 18th, scheduled at 7 pm. $20 for Runners ages 14 and up, $10 for ages 14 and under. Race day registration prices increase to $25 for ages 14 and up and $15 for ages 14 and under. T-shirts, finisher medals and age awards will be presented.
… West Virginia University football coach Dana Holgorsen has announced that Clint Trickett will be the team’s starting quarterback entering the 2014 season.
Trickett saw action in eight games, with seven starts, as a redshirt junior in 2013 after transferring to WVU from Florida State. He completed 123-of-233 passes for 1,605 yards and seven touchdowns. Trickett had shoulder surgery in the off season, but is said to be “perfectly healthy” heading into the August practice sessions.
… West Virginia University will place remaining 2014 football season tickets on sale beginning Tuesday, June 24, at 9 a.m.
Season tickets for the six-game home schedule are $365 each. A limited number of tickets in the Green Zone will be available, including season tickets in the Family FunZone in section 133. Season tickets in the Green Zone and Family FunZone will be available on-line at WVUGAME.com and do not require a per seat Mountaineer Athletic Club (MAC) contribution.
… The current Marshall-Ohio football series, scheduled to end after a Sept. 12, 2015 date at the Bobcats’ Peden Stadium, will resume in 2019 and 2020, the two schools announced Monday. The Herd will host Ohio on Sept. 14, 2019, and return the game in Athens the following season on Sept. 19.
… Thundering Herd basketball recruit Shane Hall has decided not to play for Marshall. The 6’8” forward has returned home to eastern Ky. (See story on this page).
… Former WVU basketball player Terry Henderson, who decided to transfer, will end up as I predicted, North Carolina State. That is close to his hometown.
… Marshall Softball will be hosting a camp on July 28 and an “all-skills camp” July 29.
