The Mingo County pipeline to the Belfry football program continues. Deonte Joplin, an All-Cardinal Conference tailback, has already transferred to the Pike County School. The speedy Joplin will be a junior this season. He was one of Mingo Central’s top ground gainers rushing for close to 1,000 yards this past season.


Joplin was honorable mention all-state in W.Va. in 2013. He follows many other Mingo County talents who have went to Belfry over the past few years to play football. Those names include former Kentucky Wildcat star David Jones, Doug Howard, brothers Micah and Jonah Caudill, Corey Chapman, Ivan Lee and senior to be Austin Hatfield.


… A meeting will be held June 19 at 6 pm at the former WHS gym to organize a men’s Adult Summer Basketball League. Rick Wilkerson, a longtime youth basketball coach, will be in charge of the league. If you’re interested you need to attend this meeting, or you may contact Rick by phone at 304-235-3892 or by email at riw59@yahoo.com.


In years past there were summer basketball leagues and winter independent leagues and tourneys in the area. I always enjoyed playing in these leagues.


It’s good to see this being organized again.


… Chris Chugunov, a high school quarterback from New Jersey, has committed to the WVU Mountaineers.


Rated by Rivals as a three-star pro-style quarterback, the 6-foot-1, 188-pound Chugunov said he called Dana Holgorsen and offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson on Monday afternoon to confirm his pledge.


The class of 2015 prospect told Rivals he considers his recruiting finished. He is said to be a very underrated quarterback with loads of potential.


Rivals writer Keenan Cummings of WVSports.com said West Virginia coaches had been fond of Chugunov for several months.


…Alex Locklear, an offensive tackle from Spring Valley High, has committed to play for Marshall, Vandy247 reported Wednesday. Listed at 6-foot-5, 295 pounds, Locklear attended Vanderbilt’s camp Tuesday. His college list, 247sports.com says, includes Vandy, Holy Cross, James Madison and West Virginia.


… The volleyball camp scheduled for this weekend (Friday and Saturday) at Mingo Central High School has been postponed. It will be moved to July, according to Coach Jan Cisco. Marshall University will conduct the camp.


… An 80th birthday party and celebration will be held Saturday for David Jerry Martin at the Calvary Baptist Church in West End from 2 to 4 p.m. Martin is a longtime Boy Scout leader and former railroad employee. All of his former scouts and co-workers are invited to attend.


Martin is a former standout softball player and American Legion baseball player here in Williamson.


… For parents looking for something for their kids to do this summer, the local bowling alley might be an option. Owner Gary Stepp said he is offering a summer special where kids 18 and under can bowl all day for only $5. This will be from 2 p.m. till in the evening hours. Stepp said he wanted to give kids a chance to learn how to bowl and give residents an affordable outlet for their children during the summer break.
