Mingo Central has made it to the West Virginia State Track Tournament for the third straight year.
The state meet will be Friday and Saturday, May 23 – 24 at Laidley Field in Charleston.
On Friday, May 23 the event starts at 2 p.m., while on Saturday, May 24, the meet starts at 9 a.m.
Tyra Joplin won the school’s 1st ever Regional Championship by finishing 1st in the 100 Meter Individual. She ran 12.90 which was the 2nd fastest time in all Class AA Regionals this year. The following athletes made it to State tournament according to Coach Brad Webb.
Garrett Moore jumped a school record 18’ 10 in the long jump and try for a state title. Garrett Moore, Taylor Thornsbury, Chase Justice and Deonte Joplin made it to State in the boys 4 x 100 Meter Relay. Tyra Joplin, Lakin Reed, Amber Hensley and Mikazia Rhodes made it to State in the girls 4 x 100 Meter Relay.
The team is very young and very excited with 7 out of the 8 making their 1st ever trip to State. The only returner from last year is sophomore Garrett Moore. This is what you put in the work for at practice is to make it to State and it has finally paid off. Mingo County should be proud of these young people and hopefully we will have fan support at State. “The forecast has temps in the 70’s and no rain. So it should be a great weekend to come out and cheer on your team,” Webb said. Tug Valley has also made it to State and it should be a great time to support all Mingo County athletes.
