WAYNE - The Lady Pioneers of Wayne downed Mingo Central 9-0 to win the Class AA, Region IV, Section 4 sectional softball championship in tournament action on Monday at Wayne.
Senior Jessie Rowe had a two-run triple and struck out nine while pitching a two-hit shutout to lead Wayne over the Lady Miners.
The Miners had just two hits in the Wayne game. Lester took the pitching loss for MCHS in the championship game.
The three teams had agreed to a single-elimination format prior to the tournament.
Mingo Central advanced to the championship game with a 10-9 walk-off win over Tolsia in the opening game of the tourney.
The Miners scored the winning run on the Lady Rebels’ 10th error of the contest in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Makenna Pinson had an RBI double for Mingo Central while Kristyn Johnson and Kara Lester had two RBIs each. Lester got the win on the rubber for MCHS.
Kerrie Lahoda had three hits, two doubles, and three RBIs for Tolsia. Kaitlyn Browning had two hits and two RBIs.
Wayne will now await the Scott/Chapmanville regional winner. Wayne beat the Skyhawks and Tigers twice apiece in the regular season.
Wayne will play host to the regional semifinal Thursday, May 15.
The Lady Pioneers (18-7), who have won the past two AA state titles, had seven hits in the win against Mingo Central.
