Matt Jewell, the starting catcher for Nitro High School, is the son of Gary and Karen (Redwine) Jewell, formerly of Chattaroy.
He is a sophomore at Nitro, who is currently ranked No. 2 in Class AAA in West Virginia, is shining bright for the Wildcats.
A college in Virginia recently called his parents and said they would like for Matt to go to the Dominican Republic in August with an amateur baseball team. Matt , 16 years old, is already getting recruiting letters and he is interested in WVU and Marshall.
His dad was an outstanding southpaw pitcher for the Williamson Wolfpack and Babe Ruth teams back in the late 1970s. His uncle Larry was a catcher on those teams who caught for his twin brother Gary.
… The spring semester will soon be over and that means various camps will be conducted in the area.
Kelly Wells of the University of Pikeville will be holding his boys and girls basketball camps for kid’s ages 5-14 years old. It will be from June 9-12 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily. The camp is concentrated on fundamental skills. UPike’s women’s coach Joanna McNamee will also assist with the camp, along with assistant coaches for the men’s and women’s programs.

… The WVU football team will be adding another transfer from Pitt. Cullen Christian, who spent three years at Pitt, after transferring from Michigan, will play in the defensive backfield for the Mountaineers. He is a 6’0”, 195 pounder who will be eligible right away because of the graduation rule. He has already received his degree at Pitt and will enroll in the Graduate program at WVU.
… Wells is also conducting a men’s team camp from June 16 to 19. Games will be played at the old UPike (Pikeville College) gymnasium, Pikeville High School, Pike Central and the new Mullins Elementary gym. The games start at 10 a.m. each day and run until 10 p.m. The cost is $150 per day for three games. For more info contact Wells at 606-205-8661.
… Former Belfry High School and University of Kentucky standout David Jones will be holding a football camp on Saturday, July 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for players in grades kindergarten through 8th grade. Registration is 8 a.m. that morning. The camp fee is $50 per child.
Fundamentals will be stressed at the camp which will be held at CAM Stadium at Belfry High School. Each camper will receive a T-shirt. For more information you can go on Facebook – David Jones Football Camp.
