Sam Jiunta, the son of former Williamson High School athlete Mike Jiunta, is the starting second baseman and bats lead off for (Lexington) Henry Clay High School.

In 12 games, he’s batting .391, leads the team in RBIs, hits and runs scored. Sam is also solid defensively. He has only made one error in 43 chances.

No doubt Mike is very proud of his son. It was great to hear from my old Wolfpack baseball teammate. Mike played both baseball and football for WHS back in the mid-1970s.

In his most recent game, Sam was very reliable at the plate for Henry Clay. Sam went 4-5, drove in one run and scored two runs. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the third, fourth, and eighth innings.

In a recent game Mounts had contact with a former local baseball standout. Greg VanZant, the former WHS and Post 49 baseball standout, who later went on to play and coach at WVU, is now umpiring college baseball. VanZant was calling behind the plate at a recent Tech game.

Marshall University is hosting WVU Tech in a four-game baseball series at the Huntington YMCA Kennedy Center field beginning with a 2 p.m. Wednesday contest. Other games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday begin at 3 p.m.

… It’s looking like Marshall University is waiting to see if Mike D’Antoni will seriously accept a job offer to coach at his alma mater. D’Antoni, a former Herd basketball star in the early 70s, is currently coaching the Los Angeles Lakers. If he would take the job, no doubt season ticket sales would skyrocket in Huntington.

It would create a lot of excitement that hasn’t been seen in many years for the Marshall basketball program. Last night could have been the last time the Mullens, W.Va. native coaches in Los Angeles. He was expected to be fired after the final game of the season.

… Former Tug Valley golfer Davey Jude is on the Thundering Herd’s golf team. Jude has done well for the MU team this season. Jude is a native of the Kermit area.

… The Kentucky High School Athletic Association on Tuesday released its proposed football alignment for the 2015-18 seasons. Belfry would remain in Class 3A, District 6 with Lawrence County, Magoffin County, Pike Central and Sheldon Clark.

… Kentucky fans are pleased that 7’0” center/forward Willie Cauley-Stein is staying for another year. Now they are awaiting word from the Harrison twins. It is likely that Julius Randle and James Young are headed to the NBA, but some of the others are riding the fence. With more top recruits coming in to the Wildcat program next season, and with the players that will likely remain in Lexington, UK will be highly favored to win it all next season.

… ESPN has announced that the 2014 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game between West Virginia and Alabama on Saturday, Aug. 30, will kickoff at 3:30 p.m., ET and will be televised on either ABC or ESPN2.
