PHELPS, Ky. – Former Paintsville High School basketball star J. R. VanHoose has written a book on the history of his eastern Kentucky High School.
“It’s a full chronicle of the Paintsville Tigers hoops history is coming your way for the first time,” VanHoose said. “This was years of research I compiled.”
It is titled Paintsville Tigers Basketball: A History.
VanHoose is Paintsville’s very own 1998 Mr. Basketball and helped lead the Tigers to a Sweet 16 State Championship.
The book is a yearbook-style register of every game and noteworthy accomplishments of the Paintsville Tiger teams and some of its players, according to VanHoose.
“It is an all-in-one easy-to-read book. It’s a time warp through the years with team photos, rosters, game scores and notes. This is your chance to own a piece of Paintsville History and discover facts about players, past and present, that you may not have known,” VanHoose added.
VanHoose went on to play and start at Marshall University from 1998-2002. The 6’10” VanHoose is just one of two Herd players to finish their career with over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
VanHoose is currently coaching the girls team and teaching History at Phelps High School.
