MIDLAND TRAIL – The Lady Panthers of Tug Valley won the co-final of the Class A, Region 3, Section 1 tournament defeating Midland Trail 59-26 on Wednesday night.
The Lady Panthers have battled injuries all season long, however they are now healthy and are playing much better basketball. Thus, they earned a trip to the coveted West Virginia Girl’s State Tournament next week in Charleston.
Tug Valley had to hit the road for the co-finals of the regional after narrowly losing to Sherman in the sectional final last week.
TVHS jumped out to a 31-15 halftime lead and outscored Trail 28-11 in the second half to cruise to the co-regional championship.
Senior center Hannah Armstrong led the Lady Panthers with 18 points, while junior point guard Adreana Vance scored 13. Taylor Parsley added 8 points, while Emily Baisden and Katie Robinson each added 6.
Armstrong finished with 6 rebounds, Vance contributed 7 boards and Parsley had 9 rebounds.
“We played exceptionally well. We played 32 minutes of basketball and good team ball,” said longtime assistant coach Aileen Perry. “Everyone contributed to the win. We set a goal at the beginning of the season and never lost sight of it. We are excited and looking forward to playing next week in Charleston.”
“We rebounded well and our defense vaulted us to the lead and we stayed there. We got some key points from steals and turnovers,” Perry added.
The next game for the Lady Panthers will be at the Charleston Civic Center in the state tournament next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Tug Valley gets the No. 8 seed and will have to go up against perennial Class A power Huntington St. Joe in the first round. (The WDN will have a preview of that game in a later edition of the paper.)
