CHARLESTON – The Bridgeport Indians scalped the Mingo Central Miners 86-51 in the Hoops Classic on Saturday morning at the Charleston Civic Center.

Bridgeport, ranked No. 2 in the state, jumped out to a 22-11 first quarter lead and led 45-22 at the half.

They continued the onslaught in the second half riding off with an easy win over Mingo Central.

“We started off slow and it kind of snowballed,” said Mingo Central coach Brad Napier. “We didn’t play well early.”

“They have a good team. Bridgeport is well-coached – they’re ranked No. 2 in the state for a reason. They were a final four team last season,” he added. “We’ve got to learn to play against tough competition nigh in and night out,” Napier said. “We don’t have any easy games on our schedule, especially early in the season. We just have to learn from this loss and work to get better.”

Mingo Central (0-3) heads to Florida for a 3-game stint in a tournament at Disney World right after Christmas. They will play three quality opponents on Dec. 27, 28 and 30th.

Senior Alex “Booger” Lee led the Miners with 17 points, while Mallie May was the only other player in double figures with 10. Adam Dillon chipped in 7 points, while Spencer Wilson and Chase Hatfield each scored 4.

Lee had seven rebounds, while May had 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals.

MCHS only had one 3-pointer, that was by Stevie Hammond, in the first quarter. Hammond also had 4 steals and 3 assists.

Ryan Sprouse led Bridgeport with 20 points, while Chase Robey added 16 and Logan Smith 12.

Many of the players on the Indian’s roster also played on the Class AA state championship football team.

“They have some real good athletes and run the floor well,” Napier said of Bridgeport.
