60th District change will be in 2014

As I reported a couple of weeks ago in a column, the KHSAA had to vote on whether to move Lawrence County to the 60th District for basketball, baseball, softball and other sports.
That vote went through, however the move won’t take place until fall of 2014.
Many local fans don’t understand the logic of the move. There are those who thought that moving Sheldon Clark, which is geographically closer in nearby Martin County, would have been a better move into the 60th.
Currently the district consists of Belfry, Pike Central and Phelps. The trip to Louisa, Ky., is an especially long one for Phelps, which is in the southern corner of Pike County.
There had been a report on a local sports radio show that the move of LCHS would take place immediately. However, that was a premature report.
The schedules were already made for the 2013-14 basketball season and it would have been a mad scramble to add those games and possibly drop other schools from the respective schedules.
It was the correct thing to do as far as postponing the district realignment. But it would have been a better decision to have moved Sheldon Clark to the local district.
In fact, due to some damage to the Sheldon Clark High School building, the school has had to move to Warfield Middle School until a new school can be built or repairs can be made to the old school, which was built in the early 1970s.
The Cardinals will actually play at least three games at the Williamson Fieldhouse this season.
SHORT STUFF: The 3rd annual “Battle for the Lantern,” where Mingo Central feeder middle schools: Burch, Gilbert, Matewan and Williamson, both girls’ and boys’ basketball teams will participate in a fun evening showcasing upcoming talent as future Miners.
The girls will play Tuesday, Nov. 26, with games starting at 6 p.m. while the boys will play on Tuesday, Dec. 3, with games starting at 6 p.m. The MCHS boosters encourage fans to come out and support these middle school student athletes and the MCHS Boys Basketball Boosters as they host another Battle for the Lantern. Student tickets are $3; while adult tickets will be $5. Concession will be available.
… The date for the Huntington Prep basketball game at Mingo Central will be Wednesday, Dec. 11, not on Friday the 13. I was given the incorrect date by mistake in my original column for this event. The West Virginia team will play Genesis Prep from Virginia. Both squads have several Division I commitments or potential recruits on their rosters. More on this game at a later date ….
Congratulations to Lenore for winning the middle school cheer competition. Kermit was the runner-up, while Matewan finished third. The Tug Valley feeder system continues to bring in cheerleaders for the Panther squad, which has become a powerhouse at the regional and state competition. With both Lenore and Kermit finishing one-two, it only bodes well for the future of the TVHS cheer program. …. The Big 12 Conference has announced that WVU’s Saturday, Nov. 30, Big 12 Conference football contest against Iowa State at Milan Puskar Stadium will be televised on FOX Sports 1 at 4 p.m.
