PARKERSBURG – Coming off a big win over the Poca Dots the Mingo Central Miners moved up to No. 14 in the Class 2A poll released by the WVSSAC on Tuesday afternoon.

Last week Mingo Central (4-2) had dropped to No. 16, but they moved back up in the most recent poll.

Mingo Central will travel to Chapmanville to take on the No. 17 ranked Tigers. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools, now linked in the Cardinal Conference. If the playoffs started this week, the Tigers would be on the outside looking in.

Meanwhile, Tug Valley (2-5) dropped to No. 27 in Class A. It is a longshot for the Panthers to make the playoffs this season.

It is possible for teams with a 5-5 record to make the playoffs, but with the point system in West Virginia, it is unlikely. Tug Valley plays at Van this weekend, then they have an open date. They wind up the regular season against No. 4 Man and at Clay County.

Meanwhile other regional teams that are ranked see Logan at No. 18 in Class 3A. The Wildcats invade Mingo Central next week. Wyoming East is tied at No. 6 in 2A, while Westside is No. 22. River View is No. 21 in 2A, while Tolsia is No. 25.

The top team in Class 3A is Huntington, followed by George Washington, Point Pleasant and Martinsburg.

The No. 1 ranked team in 2A is Wayne, followed by Frankfort, Bluefield, Bridgeport and Sissonville. Wayne has won back to back state titles.

In Class 1A the top ranked team is St. Marys, followed by Madonna, Valley (Fayette), Man and Williamstown.

The top 16 teams in each class make the playoffs in the Mountain State. The top eight teams host first round playoff games.
