NAUGATUCK – The Tug Valley Panthers started the season on a the winning note as they swam through the Sherman Tide 20-6 Friday night at Naugatuck.
Sherman took the first lead at the 7:54 mark when Bailey Kirk scored on a 2-yard run. The PAT kick failed, but the visitors held their first and only lead at 6-0.
In the second quarter, the Panthers tied the game at the 10:08 mark as sophomore quarterback Tyler Conley connected with Austin Baisden on a 40-yard pass. The extra point pass failed, but Tug Valley had knotted the game at 6-6.
In the second half, Tug Valley senior running back David Runyon came up big with two TD scores.
His first came with 11:54 left in the fourth quarter and he caught a short 5-yard pass from Conley to give the Panthers their first lead. The conversion pass failed, but the home team led 12-6.
Then with 5:19 remaining in the game, Runyon bulled in from four yards out. Conley hit Aaron Copley for the 2-point conversion and the Panthers closed it our 20-6.
Tug Valley ended the game with 175 yards on 43 carries. Conley was 9-for-14 passing for 139 yards, 2 TD and no picks. The Panthers rolled up 314 yards of total offense. They had eight penalties for 65 yards.
Individually, Runyon had 13 carries for 67 yards and a score. Conley ran 14 times for 52 yards. Phillip Lucas had seven tries for 30 yards.
Receiving Aaron Copley had two receptions for 42 yards, Runyon three catches for 40 yards and a 1 TD, while Baisden had the one catch for a 40 yard score.
Jonathan Farley led the way on defense with seven tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss. Runyon made five tackles and had one sack, Charlie Compton had five tackles and a sack, while Lucas had one sack and four tackles for the Panthers. Conley also had four tackles, and a fumble recovery, Corbin Oliver had four tackles and Copley had an interception.
