Area high school football teams will get a chance to see their respective teams in action as several scrimmages are scheduled for the next couple of weekends.

Belfry will travel to Richlands, Virginia Friday night for their first action of the pre-season. Then the Pirates will hit the road again next weekend heading to Hazard on Friday, August 23.

Mingo Central’s Buck Harless Stadium will host the first-ever Cardinal Conference Football Grid-o-rama this Saturday, Aug. 17.

All eight league teams are scheduled to scrimmage that day.

Mingo Central will play Herbert Hoover in the last of the four games. That will be at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Chapmanville Regional High School will scrimmage Poca in the first game around 3:00 p.m., while Wayne, the two-time defending Class AA state champion, is set to battle it out against the Scott Skyhawks in the second session. Tolsia will then scrimmage against Sissonville in the third scrimmage.

Mountain State teams started practice on Monday, August 5.

Buck Harless Stadium is considered one of the top high school football facilities in the state. The stadium has a Field Turf artificial surface, large locker rooms, and unlimited parking space. The seating capacity of the stadium is 5,000.

Mingo Central will travel to Inez next Friday, August 23 to take on the Sheldon Clark Cardinals in their second pre-season scrimmage.

Sheldon Clark will also have some 10-play sets this Friday evening against Ashland Fairview, who was the Class A state runner-up last year and Magoffin County.

Tug Valley will scrimmage at Logan this Saturday. The Panthers hope to have another scrimmage, possibly at home, next Friday on August 23. Nothing is set in stone yet for that date.
