I hope many of you took part in the King Coal Festival the past couple of days – despite the rainy weather.

This kind of community event is the sort of occasion that binds us together. It is what is good about small towns.

There were some other recent festivals in the area including the Matewan and Delbarton Homecomings, the Kermit Fall Festival and there is the upcoming Trailfest in Gilbert October 10-14th.

Volunteers with civic pride make these events happen. It just doesn’t happen overnight. It takes weeks of planning and preparation.

It says something about our communities. We have a sense of pride when our little town puts on such a huge event. It says something about the good people of Mingo County.

Sure, we’ve recently got a black eye with all of the indictments and arrests. We have once again gotten negative publicity that has made statewide news and even national news.

But we are a resilient people. We will bounce back. You can’t judge an entire population by a what a few politicians might have done.

In the past we have survived the most famous feud in the world, violent mine wars, tough economic mine strikes, devastating floods and crippling blizzards.

But let’s look at the good things we have. Our beautiful mountains and countryside, our ATV trails, camping, hunting and fishing opportunities.

We have so many good people – salt of the earth individuals – that care deeply about our country and our small communities.

Stand proud Mingo County.

“My kind of loyalty was loyalty to one’s country, not to its institutions or its officeholders. The country is the real thing, the substantial thing, the eternal thing; it is the thing to watch over, and care for, and be loyal to …. ‘ Mark Twain from - A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court
