A thankful heart
Strength for the Moment
By Kyle Lovern
“A thankful heart is one of the primary identifying characteristics of a believer. It stands in stark contrast to pride, selfishness, and worry. And it helps fortify the believer’s trust in the Lord and reliance of His provision, even in the toughest times. No matter how choppy the seas become, a believer’s heart is buoyed by constant praise and gratefulness to the Lord.” - John MacArthur, American pastor, teacher, speaker, author.
I was thinking last night that this year makes 43 Thanksgivings I have spent on this earth. I then began to ponder the cycle of life and Thanksgiving Day is a great measuring stick.
In the younger years I remember waking up and going outside to play. Sometimes I was hunting Indians other times they were hunting me. I am proud to say that I never hurt a Native American and one never hurt me! Then I would put up the toy gun and feast on dinner and cartoons then play some football!
I blink. I am in my teen years. Days then became more about the Dallas Cowboys and having 2 dinners, one at home and one with the girlfriend.
I blink. I am married with 2 children. It was at this point the meaning of Thanksgiving began to come clear to me. Dinner with parents, inlaws, my sister all at one table. I was so thankful to God that my trust was anchored in Him and though I was blessed everyday, this one magical day, Thanksgiving, was a day like no other.
I blink. Now over the last year and a half my dad and my father in law are no longer with us. Where did the time go? My daughter is a senior! My son is a young man, and like his dad and my dad, Thanksgiving is now about football.
I blink. I realize how blessed I am to have hitched my cart to the Lord Jesus Christ.in 1995. I realize a day will come where feasts will abound and death will be an old memory. My trust in Christ, and as the quote says, I am buoyed by constant faith and praise to my God. EVERYDAY is Thanksgiving to me now!
I blink. I realize today that lots of people have no family nor friends with which to share this day of Giving Thanks. May God comfort them as only He can, remind them of better days to come and give them STRENGTH FOR THE MOMENT. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
