WILLIAMSON - Runners from everywhere are invited to come to the Tug Valley on Saturday, Sept. 21 for the 2013 Frank O’Brien Memorial 5K Run/Walk that has been part of the annual King Coal Festival for several years.
This is the third year for the race, which honors the memory of one of the Tug Valley’s most active civic servants, Frank O’Brien. O’Brien resided in Belfry and volunteered his time for countless community events, including races sponsored by the Tug Valley Road Runners Club as well as planning and scheduling the musical entertainment for the King Coal Festival.
The Road Runners Club and the GFWC-WV Williamson Woman’s Club are presenting this year’s event. Proceeds from the event will benefit numerous community projects sponsored by the Woman’s Club including: Tug Valley Relay for Life; Hatfield-McCoy Marathon; Breast Cancer Awareness Day in Mingo County; the Woman’s Club Scholarship Fund; Camp Kno Koma (for children diagnosed with diabetes) and others.
“Frank was very interested in the betterment of our community,” said Leigh Ann Ray, Woman’s Club president. “We thought the best way to honor him would be to take this event and make in support mechanism for our community.”
The race will begin at 9 a.m. in West Williamson. Registration is $20. Awards will be given for overall race winners; first, second and third place finishers in 14 age divisions and finisher medals. There will also be a kids’ race. T-shirts commemorating the event will be given to all participants.
“Interest in running and walking is increasing at a rapid pace here in the Tug Valley and there’s no better way to incorporate this interest than to use it to promote our community projects,” Ray said. “We’ve also had great support from our businesses for the Frank O’Brien race.”
Sponsors for this year’s race include: West Virginia Del. Justin Marcum and Marcum Law Office; Tug Valley Inn; E.L. Robinson Engineering; East Kentucky Broadcasting; Williamson Medical Group; First National Bank and Greg “Hootie” Smith Law Office.
