GILBERT- The Gilbert Volunteer Fire Department, along with departments from Baisden and Hanover, responded to a house fire Wednesday around 2 p.m.

According to bystanders, firefighters arrived on the scene with the home, owned by David and Jessica Houck, engulfed in flames.

Firefighters worked for hours, in wind-chilled temperatures, battling enormous flames that had already overtaken the home. The nearest fire hydrant was nearly a quarter-mile away near the Larry Joe Harless Community Center, where firefighters ran their hoses the entire way to hook up to water.

Also assisting were local ambulance services and Gilbert’s police chief, Michel Rasmussen, who managed to move three moderately sized propane tanks away from the structure to avoid an explosion.

The homeowners were said to have been at work at the time the fire began and their children were out of town at college. There were no injuries, although it is believed the owners had a pet cat in the home that was not rescued.

The home was considered a total loss. The cause of fire is undetermined. An investigation is underway.
