PRESTONSBURG — A Floyd County man and woman find themselves accused of drug trafficking, after police responded to a complaint that they were intoxicated at a local motel.
Prestonsburg Police Officer Adam Dixon was called to Super 8 Motel around 1 p.m., Dec. 4, to respond to a complaint of an intoxicated man and woman. Upon arriving on the scene, he observed Branden E. Hurt standing outside by his vehicle. Dixon writes in his complaint that when Hurt, 27, of Prestonsburg, saw the officer, he began moving around the vehicle, toward the driver’s side.
Dixon approached Hurt and alleges he noticed Hurt exhibited signs of intoxication, including glassy eyes and slurred speech, which were further bolstered after the officer performed a field sobriety test.
Dixon placed Hurt under arrest and then searched his vehicle, where he allegedly found a soda can lid with pill residue on it, a pack of Pall Mall cigarettes with pills believed to be Xanax and Oxycontin in the bottom, a Marlboro carton with $93 inside, and a quantity of needles.
Dixon then moved inside the motel, where he encountered Kelly R. Key as she was stepping off the elevator. Dixon writes that Key also showed signs of intoxication, including glassy eyes and difficulty standing. After making contact with her, Dixon alleges she also had slurred speech.
Key, 25, of Allen, was also placed under arrest. Dixon searched her purse, where he found a sock pouch containing plastic bags and a bottle of white pills believed to be Xanax. Also in the purse was a container with blue pills believed to be Oxycontin and $741 in cash. Key also allegedly had a plastic bag containing three types of pills on her person.
Hurt and Key have each been charged with single counts of first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, third-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, and public intoxication. At a preliminary hearing Tuesday, their cases were referred to a grand jury for further consideration.
