GOODY, Ky. – Local beauties that fall between the age of three and eighteen are encouraged to participate in the Miss King Coal Beauty Pageant, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 14th, on the center stage of the Southside Mall at Goody, Ky.
Jada Hunter, who has served as the pageant coordinator for many years and who is also the current President of the Action in Mingo (AIM) group that sponsors and organizes the annual King Coal Festival, is optimistic that the beauty pageant event will be well attended and that a number of contestants will enter the competition. The Miss King Coal Festival Beauty Pageant will be held at the Southside Mall again this year on Saturday, September 14, a week before the main event for the festival.
“This will give all cheerleaders, band members, and volleyball payers an opportunity to enter and to be able to represent the festival at other events throughout the week,” remarked Hunter.
The Age Divisions will begin with 2-year olds competing in a single category for an entry fee of only $30. All girls or boys from ages 3 through 12th grade will compete in four different age divisions for $50. For the first time this year, there will be a division for Senior Citizens, ages 65 and over, and the local ladies are encouraged to compete in an event Hunter is hopeful will bring enough interest to be added to the upcoming years.
All contestants 3 years old and over must compete in a talent contest for 2 minutes or less and must bring an 8X10 or 5X7 natural picture for a Miss Photogenic contest. Please cover names with masking tape, the judges will know them by their assigned numbers. No glamour shots will be accepted.
All contestants will receive a participation trophy and are invited to ride in the King Coal parade on Festival Day, September 21st, at 5 p.m. with line-up scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Each contestant will be responsible for providing their own ride and signage for the parade.
The deadline to register for the pageant and to pay the required entry fees will be Tuesday, September 10th. Entry forms may be picked up at the Coal House located on 2nd Avenue in Williamson or at Heaven Scent, located at the Southside Mall. There will be a rehearsal from 4 to 5 p.m. at the mall on the 10th, with all participants required to attend.
