Logan County resident and 25-year outdoor columnist at The Logan Banner, Bob Fala has published his second book in as many years. Titled The Upland Alleghenies (Sixteen Years of West Virginia Woodcock and Grouse Coverts), this one is dedicated to the hunters, bird dogs and the upland game they pursue. Much of it is based in the local coalfields with some from several other Mountain State counties and a few goodies from beyond.

It ranges from the Hatfield-McCoy Feud country of the state’s southern coalfields to its highlands at Canaan Valley. Follow along with the journals of the recent past as you experience the Upland Alleghenies of West Virginia. Visit the hunting haunts of the ruffed grouse, American woodcock and a Bobwhite quail or two for good measure. Travel with the hunters and their bird dogs for all the adventures, trials and tribulations along the way.

From walking smack dab into a major pot patch to separating a bird dog from a poisonous snake to even its random battle with a wild beaver as well as other harrowing and “dog gone” encounters, this is just a small sampling. These and other events, places and several local folks that you might be familiar with are included. The book includes some 100 color photographs, many of which are based from the readership area along with some familiar faces. The book is available online at mcclainprinting.com or by calling McClain toll free at 800-654-7179.
