The Matewan vs. Gilbert Alumni Football game is a go and will be held at Buck Harless Stadium on Saturday, May 3.

The game director is Joey Fields, who is an assistant coach at Mingo Central High School.

The Matewan coaching staff includes former Tiger head coaches Yogi Kinder and David Mark McCoy. Gilbert coaches will be former Lion’s coaches Jerry Miller and Gordon Carter.

The kickoff time will be at 7:00 p.m.

“When I and Coach Kinder decided to do this game a year ago we knew it would be a great fundraiser for our football program,” Fields said. “This will help show our current players at Mingo Central the great tradition that came before them - to show the current players how much the game has meant to them and the relationships they’ve continued to have in their lives because of the game of football.”

“We could not be more thrilled to have Gilbert and Matewan alumni battle it out one last time at James H “Buck” Harless Stadium,” Field added. “We hope both communities and Mingo Central Football can benefit from this great event.”

Matewan and Gilbert had a storied football rivalry before the consolidation of the four schools that make up Mingo Central.

The rosters will be released at a later date, possibly as early as this week. Due to people mailing out their paper work and money on Friday, the rosters are not complete.
