Saturday Night will be like a flashback into the past at Lefty Hamilton Park in West Williamson as the Burch Bulldogs and Williamson Wolfpack take to the field in an alumni football game put on by Gridiron Alumni. Recently, alumni football games have became popular in the area and it didn’t take long for a recent rivalry game to be picked up.
The Burch-Williamson series hit its peak in the final 8 seasons of the two high schools existences. Since 2003, WHS leads the series, (5-4). Notably in the ’03 Season, the Wolfpack got the largest win to ever come between the two teams, 74-14. There have been some close battles though including one game nicknamed “ The Monsoon” that occurred on Burch’s Homecoming night in 2009.
Sizemore Stadium was a wet, mud bath and the entire game was a defensive struggle until the ‘Dawgs scored late and Williamson was unable to answer resulting in a 6-0 win for BHS. Overall though, the series is still lead by Williamson, (26-9-3). The three lone ties that occurred all happened sequentially in the ’48, ’51, and ’53 seasons.
Many people don’t realize that the first game ever held at Burch didn’t even happen until 1987; over 63 Years into the series. Fast-forward up to the final official meeting of the two schools in 2010 and the game was one of the most memorable for both sides. Lefty Hamilton Park recorded its largest crowd in over 8 seasons for that game and neither team disappointed with their performances.
Majority of the contest was back and forth and Williamson led by only 4 Points going into the 4th Quarter but was able to score within the final two minutes of play to make the scoreboard read, 35-24 in favor of the Wolfpack. Chris Hall, event coordinator is anticipating a large crowd on hand for Saturday’s game and suggests fans arrive early. Gates will open at 6 p.m. with kickoff occurring at 7. Adult tickets are $10, Children 6-17 with ID are $5 while kids 5 years and younger are free as well as any military members in uniform.
This is the first ever alumni game being played between the two schools and it looks to be a great evening of “throwback football” in Williamson.
