Belfry High School has started a tennis team and the community is excited about the school adding the new sport.
Alex Chandler, a new Spanish teacher at BHS, is coaching the squad.
“I am a graduate of Brigham Young University and I am originally from Denver, Colorado. After college I was accepted into a program known as Teach For America. It’s a program that takes college graduates and places them in rural and urban areas to teach,” Chandler said.
“Upon coming to Belfry, I immediately noticed that teachers are heavily involved in extracurricular activities. From coaches to sponsors, I realized that teachers here care and go all out for kids in all kinds of sports and activities. So I decided to talk to our principal, Mr. Gannon about the possibility of coaching tennis,” Chandler added.
“I played tennis in high school and felt it would be the best sport for me to get involved with. Mr. Gannon was incredibly accommodating and readily agreed to the idea. Despite high student interest, our team struggled a bit to find truly committed players, but I am pleased with the caliber of student athletes that eventually decided to be a part of the first ever tennis team,” Chandler stressed.
“Our team consists of nine boys and five girls. I am expecting us to make an impact this year. I cannot predict how well we will do, but my objective for this season is to make tennis a meaningful sport at Belfry. If the players enjoy it and want to work to be serious players, and if the town starts talking about tennis, then I will consider the season a success,” Chandler said.
Members of the team include Aryn Adkins, Kim Harvel, Brianna Sullivan, Alie Farley and Emma Harris, Nick McNamee, Reid Varney, Corbin Harris, Matt Lambert, Wilson Harris, Noah McNamee, Ashton Leedy, Blake Mendoza and Brian Preece.
We will be playing teams in the sixteenth region including Pikeville, Prestonsburg, Lawrence County, Morgan County, and other teams like Mingo Central, Logan, and Letcher Central.
