West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins announced Thursday that Jonathan Holton’s appeal for a waiver request to play this season has been denied by the NCAA.
Holton, who transferred to West Virginia from Palm Beach State Community College, will continue to practice with the team. He will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2014-15 season.
A 6-foot-7 forward from Miami, Holton averaged 10.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game as a freshman at Rhode Island, earning a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team.
Holton ranked sixth among all freshmen nationally in rebounding and double-doubles, with eight. He registered 10 or more rebounds in a game on 10 different occasions.
… The state Board of Education has given final approval to a rule dealing with how high schools handle sports concussions.
The board approved the rule during its monthly meeting last Wednesday in Charleston.
Earlier this year, legislators passed a bill requiring the Secondary School Activities Commission to draft rules aimed at preventing youth concussions. Among other things, they require schools to increase awareness and warn players of the risks of continuing to play after a concussion occurs.
The legislation also requires schools to create a written procedure for recognizing injuries and then clearing athletes to return to play, including the written permission of a licensed health care professional.

… Longtime Poca head football coach Bob Lemley has resigned after 24 seasons. Poca is a member of the Cardinal Conference with Mingo Central. During his time coaching the Dots, Lemley led them to four Class AA state championships including back to back titles in 2001-2002.
However, this past year, his team was only 1-9 and they have only had two playoff berths in the last 10 years.
… Belfry’s all-state defensive lineman Hayden Hatfield was added to the roster for the Kentucky-West Virginia Border Bowl game played Saturday. He was on the Bluegrass squad with teammates Sani Warren and Michael Barnes.
