PHELPS, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates braved the cold weather and icy roads to travel to Phelps for a basketball doubleheader on Wednesday night.

In the boy’s game, the Pirates rolled over their longtime district foe 73-53.

Garrett Fannin led BHS with 17 points, while Nathan Copley and Cameron Catron scored 14 and 13 points respectively off of the Pirates bench.

Dawson Isom added 11 points and 15 rebounds for Coach Mark Thompson’s team.

Belfry shot 26-60 from the floor for 43 percent, including 7-of-22 from behind the arc. They were 14-28 at the foul line for 50 percent. The Pirates committed 20 turnovers.

The Pirates led 19-4 after the first period and 39 to 20 by halftime.

Phelps was 18-57 from the floor for 32 percent, including 1-of-15 from 3-point land and 16-29 percent from the free throw line. The Hornets of head coach Bobby Varney committed 24 turnovers.

Freshman Elijah Branham led PHS with 14 points, while Leon Blankenship added 10. Matt Hatfield chipped in 10, while Steven Prater and Davon Smith both scored 8 points each.

Belfry is scheduled to travel to Logan, W.Va. tonight and play host to 15 Region power Johnson Central on Friday.

Phelps is scheduled to play at Hurley, Va. tonight and Man, W.Va. on Friday.

Belfry 43, Phelps 31

PHELPS, Ky. – The Lady Pirates of Belfry defeated 60th District rival Phelps 43-31.

Belfry jumped out to a 14-5 first quarter lead and led 26-14 at the half.

Junior Emily Baker led Belfry with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Paige Goff added 7 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.

Caitlyn Norman fired in 19 points to lead the Lady Hornets, while Donessa Maynard chipped in 9 points.

Belfry made 16-53 shots from the floor for 30 percent, including 2-of-9 from 3 point land. They were once again cold from the foul line going 9-of-24 for 38 percent.

Phelps made 10-30 of their field goal tries for 33 percent and 1-of -9 from behind the arc. The Hornets were also cold from the free throw line making only 10-33 for 30 percent. PHS committed 24 turnovers, while BHS had 14 miscues.

Belfry will travel to Pike Central on Friday and Pikeville on Saturday for back-to-back games.

Phelps will travel to Hurley, Va. tonight and Man, W.Va. on Friday for a pair of doubleheaders with the boys’ team.
