Two local teams will continue in the post season tonight as Belfry hosts Lawrence County and Mingo Central travels to Sissonville for playoff football action.

The Pirates, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A in the Bluegrass State, will host Lawrence County for the second time. The Pirates beat the Bulldogs in the regular season 35-12.

The Miners will travel to Sissonville for a first round playoff game in Class 2A. This is a match-up of the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds. This is Mingo Central’s highest seed to date.

Belfry has made it to the Class 3A finals the last couple of seasons, only to lose to Central of Louisville. The Pirate fans hope to make it back to the title game again this year.

Coach Philip Haywood is led by seniors Sani Warren, Trenity Carr, Justin Johnson, Joey Duty, Michael Barnes and Hayden Hatfield. Several underclassmen have also contributed to Belfry’s fine 10-1 record. Their only loss came at the hands of Class 4A Johnson Central.

Mingo Central hopes to make history this season. It would be the first playoff win in school history if they can defeat the Indians. This is only the school’s third season after the consolidation.

It is the second consecutive playoff appearance. The school won more games in the regular season than in those first two years. They went 5-5 in 2011 and 2012, but finished 8-2 this year.

This is also the highest seed the Miners have had in their young history. Seniors Alex Lee and Brandon Blakenship lead a young Mingo Central squad, which is full of sophomores and juniors who have greatly contributed to coach Yogi Kinder’s team.

Both games are slated to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The Mingo Central game can be heard on WXCC 96.5 FM with Joe Kinzer and Pedro Ledger. The Belfry game will be broadcast on WDHR 93.1 FM with Bobby Norman and Steve Mickey.

Other games in the region include: Logan at Point Pleasant, Bishop Donahue at Man, Nicholas County at Wyoming East, Phillip Barbour at Wayne, and in the Kentucky playoffs, Pike Central is at Breathitt County, while Allen Central and Pikeville played on Thursday night.
