GOODY, Ky. – For the second time this season the Lawrence County Bulldogs will visit Pond Creek in hopes of pulling the upset over the Belfry Pirates.
Lawrence County put up a good fight against the Pirates back in October, but in the end they were no match for Belfry, losing 35-12.
However, Belfry only led 14-6 at the half, but they scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter and another in the final to pull away. The Dogs got one late score.
“We just try to improve each week and every day in practice,” Belfry coach Philip Haywood said. “We’ve seen improvement, but we are still not where we want to be.”
“They (Lawrence County) played us tough and we expect another good effort from them,” Haywood said. “We need to be ready and to take care of the football.”
Lawrence County is led by senior quarterback A. J. Cyrus, a dual-threat quarterback. Senior running backs Derek Ferguson and Ricky Goble have led LCHS in rushing. Cameron Little and Cole Mosley could also see action running the football for the Dogs.
Timmy Dalton, a freshman split end, leads the team in receiving yards, while Noah Lambert a junior wide receiver, is also a threat.
Defensively, Lawrence County is led by Grant Kiser, Austin Ross, Michael Adams, Corey Frazier and Morgan Triplett.
Belfry will start seniors Sani Warren at quarterback, Trenity Carr at fullback, Justin Johnson at one halfback and either Davontae Dari or freshman Andrew Fletcher at the other running back slot. Junior Austin Hatfield has been hampered by an ankle injury. His status is day to day.
Freshmen Cole Bentley and Raquan Horton share the tight end duties, while junior Keaton Taylor is the split end, and senior Cody Bostic also sees action at wide receiver.
The offensive line is led by junior center Macky Francis, senior guard Zack Lester and junior Drew Mullins, while the tackles are senior Michael Barnes and sophomore Austin Gibbs. Junior Jeremy Harrison, senior Richard Nelson and senior Zack Thompson could also see action on the offensive line.
The defense has been led by lineman Hayden Hatfield and T. J. Dotson, while Bentley, Horton and Austin Hall also see action up front. The linebackers are Joey Duty and Dakota Stanley, while the secondary is Warren, Taylor, Cameron Johnson and Kaleb Edwards. Cameron Catron and Reed Williamson also see plenty of playing time on defense.
Freshman Austin Woolum is the place kicker, while Devin Wellman handles the punting chores. Cam Johnson is the long snapper, while Woolum, Taylor and Justin Johnson return punts and kickoffs.
Game time temperatures are expected to be in the mid 30s Friday night. The game can be heard on 93.1 FM radio with Bobby Norman and Steve Mickey.
