I got my hair cut last week. It’s like a doctor’s appointment for me-always stressing me out. I guess I have too high expectations. I take in a picture of a movie star or celebrity and expect to come out looking just like them! Hasn’t happened yet.

This time, I took in a picture of Halle Berry. She had the cutest hair, swoopy on the sides, no doubt with layers. I was embarrassed to show it to Megan, my hairdresser/stylist/friend/would-be miracle worker. I put my thumb over her face so she wouldn’t see.

She pulled out her scissors and started making ninja sword sounds. We chatted while she did her work. Hair flew everywhere. After a while, she turned me around to face the mirror. It wasn’t Halle Berry at all; just plain ole me, but with cooler hair. Dad-gum-it!

When you leave the salon, you rarely look like yourself. I had so much cool goo in my hair that I would have gone up in smoke had somebody on the block lit a cigarette. I took a picture of my hair with my cell phone to send my daughter. I can’t EVER get it to look that good! After several stern faced selfies, I sent her the best one. (It’s hard to take a pic of the side of your head when you can’t see!) I told her to skip the look on my face and look at my cool hair. She texted back, “Mom, it looks like it always does.” I told her, “Nuh, uh, I look like Halle Berry!”

When I got home, my beloved loved it, which gave him extra points. He asked what he always does, “Do YOU like it?” Translated: if I didn’t like it, I would complain to him every day until it grew out.

Sometimes women do get bad cuts or colors. You have to keep it together until you get to the car! Been there, done that. Now, I NEVER EVER say the word “crazy” when getting a new do. That was a difficult time, but it grew out-praise the Lord.

I have to remember that while men (and women) look at appearance, that’s not what God looks at. I Samuel 16:7 says: “The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” It’s probably a good thing. If it were up to me, I would look like Halle Berry…in the Catwoman outfit!
