GILBERT - An ATV crash on the Rockhouse section of the Hatfield and McCoy Trails in Gilbert occurred Saturday, leaving one dead and one hospitalized.

The Gilbert Volunteer Fire Department was called at about 8:45 p.m. to the scene on the trail, where they found the 22-year-old female, ATV driver, with serious injuries and a 22-year-old male passenger, who had been thrown 130 feet over the mountain, leaving him dead at the scene.

The Gilbert Volunteer Fire Department rope team was able to assist in retrieving the passenger’s body, which was taken to Mounts Funeral Home by STAT Ambulance Service, while the female was taken by LEASA Ambulance Service to Man. From there, she flown to Cabell-Huntington Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

The couple traveled to West Virginia from Pennsylvania earlier in the week to shop for a new ATV. They purchased a new Can-Am side by side on Friday and took it for their first ride on the trails late Saturday afternoon.

A spokesman for the Gilbert Volunteer Fire Department said this is the fourth fatality on on that particular trail. They ask ATV riders to use extra caution to avoid accidents.
