NAUGATUCK - The Burch Middle School Lady Bulldogs were crowned Mingo County Girls Basketball Champions by defeating the Kermit Lady Blue Devils 38-30 Saturday at Tug Valley High School.
Burch jumped out to a 9-6 first quarter lead behind 4 quick points by Shylah Goff.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to capitalize on Kermit getting into early foul trouble, gaining a 19-15 halftime lead.
Kermit’s Sydney Whitt had 6 first half points, including a 3-pointer in the final seconds to keep the Lady Blue Devils within striking distance.
Both teams had a defensive battle in the third, with Burch leading 23-17. After a series of made baskets by both teams to start the fourth quarter, Kermit’s Kendra Spaulding was able to close the lead to four, 34-30 behind a quick 6 points midway through the final quarter.
With less than two minutes remaining, Kaileah Williams hit a big three off of an out of bounds play, putting Burch up 38-30 and sealing the championship for the Lady Dogs.
Burch Forward Caitlyn Curry was spectacular throughout the tournament, leading all scorers with 16 points, scoring 31 total points in her two tournament games this year.
Whitt led KMS with 10 points, while Spaulding and Audrey Sturgell each scored 9.
The Lady Bulldogs of Coach Jeremy Davis finished the season with a 16-4 county record, beginning the year as Battle of the Lantern Champions and ending with the county title. Kermit has finished county runner up for the 2nd straight year.
