During the re-enactment of the Matewan Massacre, held recently on the anniversary of the event in 1920, actors portraying “thugs” with the Baldwin-Felts detective agency (top photo), working for Stone Mountain Coal Co., evict miner Charlie Kelly from his company-owned house because he joined the union. The photo below is a re-enactment of the deadly shootout that resulted when Matewan residents, led by the town’s police chief, Sid Hatfield, confronted the Baldwin-Felts detectives.
