CHATTAROY - An elderly Chattaroy resident was struck by a car as he reportedly was walking in the middle of the road Thursday evening, near the Norfolk & Southern Railroad crossing in front of the Chattaroy Church of God.

According to Mingo County Sheriff’s Deputy M.J. Mounts, Eddie Davis, 72, was walking toward his home that located near the Chattaroy exit of U.S. Highway 119 when he was struck by a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am. According to the driver and eyewitnesses, the victim, who was accompanied by his brother, was walking directly in the lane of traffic and the accident was unavoidable. The unnamed driver told Mounts that the man walked into the middle of the lane, directly into the path of his car, and said he did not have enough time to brake before the impact occurred.

Davis is said to have suffered extensive injuries and was treated by medics with STAT Ambulance and first responders at the scene that included members of the Chattaroy Volunteer Fire Department, then was transferred to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington via Health-Net. No updates regarding his condition were available Friday, but law enforcement officers said they had been told he was in critical condition.

Also assisting Deputy Mounts at the scene were fellow deputies L. Thomas and P.A. Mounts.
