A new restaurant, Hog Heaven Pit BBQ, owned and operated by Jason and Cindy Childers, has now opened in downtown Harlan. Located at 212 East Clover Street across from the Justice Center, they offer smoked barbecued ribs, pulled pork, tenderloin, chicken and brisket at their newly constructed premises.

“We’ve always wanted to own our own restaurant,” said the Childers. “We wanted to offer residents something different and we’ve always loved barbecue.”

Slow smoking the barbecue, from six to 12 hours, Jason said all the side dishes offered at the restaurant are homemade. “All of our sauces are also homemade and we offer sweet, original and spicy,” said Cindy. “We use real potatoes in our potato salad and fresh items in all our other side dishes. It all tastes just like it was made at home.”

Jason added their smoker, which sits outside the restaurant, is 4 feet round and 12 feet long.

“If you get a whiff of that smoker you’ll want to come inside and taste some of our delicious barbecue,” said Jason. “We can seat 24 in the restaurant or you can carry your meal out. We don’t deliver right now, but we hope to offer that service in the future as our business increases.”

Employing six people at this time, the restaurant’s menu includes items such as pulled pork, tenderloin, rib, chicken and brisket sandwiches, combos and dinners, BBQ sliders, hot dogs, chili, chips and cheese, BBQ nachos, garden salads, meat by the pound, one-half and full racks of ribs, potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, Cajun corn and bottled drinks. They also offer “Piglet Meals” for the child, which includes BBQ slider or hot dog, chips and a juice box.

“We invite everyone to stop by and try some of our mouth-watering barbecue and delicious sides,” said Jason. “We’ll give you a smile, fast service, delicious meal and a thank you for supporting our business.”

For reservations, take-out or parties, you may call 606-573-2299. The Childers said they can accommodate large orders, smoke turkeys or any other meat with prior notice. Hog Heaven Pit BBQ is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and closed on Sundays.
