CHARLESTON - Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has filled the vacancy left after the conviction of former Mingo County Circuit Judge Michael Thornsbury in a federal corruption investigation resulted in his resignation. The position has been filled by senior status judges since last October, when Thornsbury resigned.

Miki Thompson, who was the top finisher for the judge’s seat in the 2014 primary election to claim the Democratic nomination, has been appointed to the position and will be sworn into office within the next 30 days or so. There were no Republican candidates in the primary.

Thompson is currently serving the residents of Mingo County as Family Court judge and was one of four candidates who vied for the judge’s seat.

Thompson graduated from the University of Kentucky and began her career as assistant Mingo County prosecuting attorney in 1992. In 2009, she began serving as Family Court judge in the 8th Circuit, serving Mingo County.

“Miki has a track record of working for West Virginia families during her time as a Family Court judge for the 8th Circuit,” Tomblin said. “I believe she will continue her commitment to serving the people and the families of Mingo County well in her new role as circuit judge.”
The Daily News spoke with Thompson on Tuesday evening after the governor announced her appointment, and was provided the following statement:
“I want to express my gratitude for Governor Tomblin’s appointment as Mingo County circuit judge,” Thompson said.
“I also want to thank him for the respect he has shown the citizens of our county, first by letting them choose their judge in the recent election and by going forward today, as soon as the election was certified, to make his appointment. Now we can begin an era of certainty and stability in rebuilding this county.
“I expect to take the oath of office within the next 30-or-so days, and I look forward to getting down to business. I pledge to serve all of Mingo County with boldness, transparency and fairness to each and every citizen.”
