Hatfield-McCoy marathon to take place this weekend

WILLIAMSON - The annual Hatfield-McCoy marathon festivities will take place this weekend, and a multitude of events are planned for visitors and locals alike.

On Friday, a Hatfield-McCoy narrated tour will take place for those interested in the history of the famous feud, to points throughout Matewan and Williamson that are actual sites of the Hatfields and McCoys. These tours will continue Saturday, as well.

Tickets can be purchased at www.hmtours14.eventbrite.com for $20 each, and it should be noted that only a limited number of tickets are available for each tour.

These tours will depart from the Sycamore Inn in Williamson on both days.

From 3 to 4 p.m. Friday there will be a 50 States Marathon Reunion Meeting at Belfry High School.

Also taking place on Friday is the annual pasta dinner for registered marathon runners. 5K runners and guests must pay $10 to take part, but the dinner is free to anyone registered for the other races. The dinner will take place from 4-7 p.m, also at Belfry High School.

All Hatfield-McCoy runners will meet at the Belfry High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. to meet “Devil Anse” and “Randall” from the Hatfield-McCoy skit and to have a Q&A session with race director, David Hatfield.

Race packets may be picked up on Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. p.m. at Belfry High School for all races.

On Saturday, a plethora of events are scheduled to take place, most important of these being the full marathon, which begins at 7 a.m. The Blackberry Mountain half-marathon also starts at 7 a.m. Runners participating in either of these races are to be at Food City in South Williamson, Ky., by the start time.

The “River Road Half” begins in Matewan (McCoy Street, Matewan) and the 5K begins on 2nd Avenue in Williamson (finish line), both also at 7 a.m.

Parking is not permitted at Food City/starting line, therefore runners should park in one of the public parking lots in Williamson, where shuttles will transport them to the starting line, beginning at 5 a.m. Guests of any Williamson hotel will be picked up from their hotel as well.

Live music will be featured from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring a wide variety of artists, with Katie Curry leading the lineup at 9 a.m., Loaded at 10 a.m., Flatfooting Demonstration at 11 a.m., and A Mile to Nowhere at 12:30 p.m.

Lyrick Promotions artists Chelsea Stepp, peforming at 2 p.m., and Taylyn Combs, performing at 3 p.m., will take the stage next. Finally, the band McVanHat will close out the live music with a peformance starting at 5 p.m.

Food and craft vendors will be set up throughout the day Saturday, featuring art by Vera Kay, woodcrafts by Lonnie Bowen, Sawbillies, book signings, and many more options for everyone to enjoy. These vendors will be located at the Farmer’s Market in Williamson on Second Avenue.

AIM (Action in Mingo) will hold heritage events on Saturday at the Cinderella Theater on Third Avenue and Logan Street, all of which will be free for the public to enjoy.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. AIM will have a feature doll display set up and quilting, knitting, and crocheting lessons available from experienced teachers.

10 a.m.-3 p.m. will feature “Mawmaw McCoy” from the reality TV show “White Lightning,” who will be demonstrating how to churn butter, make lye soap, and washboard laundry.

At 11 a.m. Tina Varney will demonstrate how the “flatfooting” style of dance is done in front of the stage.

At 2 p.m. there will be old-fashioned style games by the floodwall and Logan Street, including a three-legged race, sack race, egg toss and more.

The Army National Guard will be holding a “mission impossible” scavenger hunt as well for 3-5 person teams. The hunt will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Williamson Armory, and tickets are $25 per group. For more information, call (304) 235-2084.
