WEST WILLIAMSON - Next month will be the official start of the 2014 summer season, and with those hot, lazy summer days fast approaching, Williamson Park Board Director Peirce Whitt has been very busy getting all his ducks in a row to assure the opening of the Williamson Municipal pool goes smoothly.

Although the pool normally opens on Memorial Day weekend, this year the opening day has been pushed back until June 6, since students in both Mingo and Pike County will be in the classrooms longer because they have missed so many days due to the harsh inclement weather that wreaked havoc on the area during the winter months.

Whitt told the Daily News that he expects the 2014 summer season for the pool to be a great one, and encourages the public to take full advantage of everything the Williamson Community Center has to offer.

“We still have several reservation dates for this summer open, both for the pool as well as the community center itself,” Whitt said. “The price to rent the pool in the evenings from 6 p.m. until around 9 p.m., or when it gets dark, is $225. This price includes the services of two lifeguards and access to our covered picnic area that can easily accommodate 50-plus people.”

“If you would like to hold a function in the upstairs portion of the community center, that charge is $250,” he said.”We have completed a lot of remodeling jobs up there and it really looks nice.”

“We pride ourselves on having a community facility that is completely family-oriented and that has something for everyone, no matter your age,” Whitt said. “If you haven’t visited the pool in a while, make plans to come and spend the day with us. You won’t be sorry you did.”

Whitt said that the Williamson Park currently is accepting applications for the position of lifeguard. Those applying are required to be 16 years of age or older and, if they are not CPR-certified or currently hold a lifeguard certification, will be required to attend classes offered by the board to obtain those credentials. Interested individuals can pick up an application from Whitt’s office located inside the Williamson Field House between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Applications must be completed and returned no later than May 18.

One event that is sponsored by the city of Williamson that is held at the swimming pool is the annual Fourth of July celebration, which is very popular with the public. Activities are held during that time for the children, and prizes are given to those who participate. Free hot dogs, watermelon and drinks are available to all who want to participate and there is no charge for swimming during the event.
