According to an ESPN article, Kentucky Coach John Calipari has a new book coming out this week and he says the NCAA needs to makes some changes.
He writes in his book that players should have access to lawyers and be compensated to buy formal attire when representing the school and those families should be able to buy championship rings.
Here are some of the things he says the NCAA needs to change:
• Players should receive stipends of $3,000 to $5,000;
• The NCAA should cover eligible players’ insurance premiums;
• Athletes should be able to accept loans up to $50,000 against future earnings;
• If a coach leaves an institution, players should be able to transfer from that program without having to sit out a season;
• Athletes should be allowed one round-trip flight home every year.
It could be an interesting read.
SHORT STUFF: West Virginia University has announced that Georgia Southern has been added to the 2015 schedule. The non-conference schedule will all be played at Milan Puskar Stadium in 2015, which includes Georgia Southern, Liberty and Maryland.
… East Carolina and Marshall have agreed to a home-and-home football series in 2020 and 2021. The schools have played the past nine seasons as Conference USA East Division members, but East Carolina is headed to the American Athletic Conference in July.
Marshall’s season-opening visit to Greenville in 2020 will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the charter plane crash that took place as the Marshall team returned home from a loss at East Carolina. Seventy-five people died in that November 1970 crash.
… The NFL draft is around the corner and WVU should have a couple of players drafted. Charles Sims, the transfer running back who came from Houston, is projected to go in the last 2nd round or into the 3rd round. It depends on what mock draft site you visit on the internet.
Defensive end Will Clarke is projected to go in the 4th or 5th round.
Marshall did not have anyone listed in the mock drafts I viewed. However, I think tight end Gator Hoskins could get drafted late. He will at least be signed as a free agent. I’m sure a few other players will also sign free agent contracts and will get a shot at a career in the NFL.
… Cincinnati scratched pitcher Mat Latos from an injury rehabilitation start due to right elbow irritation. Red’s manager Bryan Price said he didn’t believe Latos’ injury was serious, but also said the team will take a conservative approach and reschedule a rehab appearance after the soreness was gone. The elbow bothered Latos, who had been set to pitch for Triple-A Louisville at Columbus after he threw in the bullpen last Sunday.
The Reds have been hit hard by the injury bug, especially with their pitching staff.
