Harlan woman dies in Pine Mountain crash

A single-vehicle collision Sunday on U.S. 421 on Pine Mountain has claimed the life of a Harlan woman.


According to the report from the Kentucky State Police, a 2014 Buick Encore operated by Christina Holbrook, 75, of Baxter, was traveling southbound on U.S. 421. The vehicle left the right side of the roadway, striking an embankment. The vehicle came to final rest after the impact. Holbrook was removed from her vehicle by members of the Harlan County Rescue Squad and EMS personnel. Holbrook was transported to a nearby landing zone and airlifted to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. by a Wings AirMed helicopter. Her condition is not available at this time.


A passenger in Holbrook’s vehicle, Eula N. Brock, 95, of Harlan, was pronounced dead at the scene by Harlan County Deputy Coroner Jim Rich Jr. She was not wearing a seat belt.


The cause of the crash remains under investigation by KSP Accident Reconstructionist Trooper Kenneth Sergent. He was assisted on scene by KSP Sgt. Jeremy Lee, troopers Danny Caudill and Brandon Burton. Also assisting at the scene were deputies from Harlan County Sheriff’s Office and members of the Bledsoe Fire Department.
